Category: New Construction
Type: Urban Waterfront, Landscape
Location: Shanghai, China
Status: Completed (with Atelier Z+)
The 5-kilometer northern shore of the Yangpu River in downtown Shanghai – once a vibrant industrial area – was in derelict condition for several years. The government initiative to renovate this area into a continuous, public waterfront park was initiated in 2014 and construction was completed in 2018.
By focusing on the former condition of the site, this design reconstitutes important industrial building footprints as sunken gardens for seating and the cultivation of local plant species. Due to its scale and context, this project negotiates complex urban planning restrictions as the basis for architectural expression.
